Equal pay – Asda/Morrisons

Did you know that 35,000 Asda employees (mostly women) and 2,300 Morrisons workers (again, mostly women) have succeeded in their first steps towards an equal pay claim?

In the case of Asda, the Supreme Court accepted that valid “comparators” were employees working at Asda’s distribution depots, most of whom were men, and that retail workers for Morrisons could be compared validly with workers at Morrisons distribution centres.

If these claims succeed then Asda and/or Morrisons may have to pay out millions of pounds in missed payments.  If this happens, watch your weekly shopping bill grow!

The moral is that all employers should check very carefully the terms and conditions of their employees to ensure that there is compliance with the Equality Act 2010.  If you need help with this or any other employment issue call us on 01606 74301 or email gmr@mosshaselhurst.co.uk or kerry.greatorex@mosshaselhurst.co.uk
