How do you react if one of your staff refuses to sit near an unvaccinated colleague?
- Firstly establish the reason why the person has chosen not to have the vaccine eg do they have a medical condition which makes them vulnerable? (If so an appropriate risk assessment should be conducted)
- Explain what measures are in place to protect employees eg screens, wearing of masks etc
- (Having the vaccine does not offer 100% protection – hence a vaccinated person can still contract and transmit COVID 19 and thereby infect their unvaccinated colleague)
- Be aware that relocating an unvaccinated person could amount to discrimination or be considered as bullying
- Point out that staff have a duty to work cohesively with, and be respectful to, each other
- Be mindful that unreasonable refusal to sit near or work with a colleague could be viewed as an act of misconduct resulting in formal action being taken
- Consider banning discussions about the vaccine in the workplace
