Crown court delays

The Law Gazette reported that recent government funding will only reduce the backlog of Crown court cases by 7,000 over the next three years.

The National Audit Office confirmed that the Crown court backlog increased by 23% in the year leading up to the 31 March 2020. This backlog has increased by a further 48% since the onset of the pandemic, to 60,692 cases on 30 June 2021.

Data published by the Crown Prosecution Service last month paints an even more concerning picture, indicating that the number of outstanding Crown court cases rose to 70,011 on 30 June.
