Religion and belief – discrimination?

In 2018 ACAS (the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service) published new guidance to help employers ensure that they are aware of the risks and numerous pitfalls associated with this area of equality law.

There are some useful tips on how employers can mitigate the legal risks posed by religion or belief covering for example:-

  • Recruitment (questions about a candidate’s religious beliefs etc)
  • Dress (consider carefully religious dress)
  • Food and drink (storage and consumption of food)
  • Rest breaks (consider prayer times)
  • Time off work (consider religious holidays/festivals)
