Who Pays for an Employee’s Parking Penalty?

MPs are not permitted to claim penalty charges and fines under Parliamentary Rules.

But what about employees?

Whilst employees may think that their employer should be responsible for a parking ticket  incurred whilst on work related business this is not necessarily the case.

It will depend on how and why the parking penalty was incurred. If the employee had no control over the situation, eg a meeting running over unexpectedly or having to carry out work somewhere with severe parking restrictions, it is likely to be the employer’s responsibility.

However,  where an employee has been careless, or receive a speeding fine, responsibility rests with the employee.

For the avoidance of doubt employers may wish to set out their rules in a Car and Car Allowance Policy.
