BEWARE OF ONLINE SCAMS

BEWARE OF ONLINE SCAMS

According to Ofcom nearly as many people report seeing scams as they do seeing bad language and rudeness.   Online scams can cause great emotional and financial harm to their victims.

A recent online scam advertised “a registered driving licence” without a test, offering  to have a driving licence printed and delivered within 4-5 days for £600

HMRC received more than 200,000 reports of scams from members of the public – one example being a call that leaves an automated message saying than an important letter has been sent from HMRC requiring immediate attention “please press 1”.  On following this prompt the caller is put through to a scammer who will request personal and financial details.

It is Ofcom’s  responsibility to ensure that  online platforms  are doing everything they can to stop scammers.

The Online Safey Act became law in October 2023 and is the first step in addressing this problem.  The Act contains a range of measures to improve online safety in the UK including duties on online platforms about having systems and processes in place to manage harmful and illegal content on their sites.
