“Quickie divorces”

Online divorces known as “quickie divorces” have become more popular over the last few years.

and there are now many alternatives to using the traditional high street solicitor.   Although these alternatives can be convenient and cheaper for clients there are concerns that not all of these unregulated providers are complying with consumer protection law.

Some of the potential risks to customers include:-

  • misleading claims about both the simplicity of the process and costs leaving clients unclear as to what they are paying for
  • inadequate quality of service including using incorrect forms, entering incorrect information, sending court papers late, not communicating efficiently with clients
  • losing important documents especially in situations where a company ceases to operate

The Competition and Markets Authority are currently keen to hear about people’s experiences with these unregulated firms to ensure that they are complying with consumer protection law.

All solicitor firms in England and Wales are regulated by The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) who ensure that solicitors meet high standards in their work and take action when risks are identified.
