How to Manage World Cup Fever
How to Manage World Cup Fever
Whenever there is an international tournament taking place employers can expect an increase in holiday requests, sudden absences through illness and requests to watch matches during working hours.
To manage this employers should set expectations early so the tournament can be enjoyed by all without it affecting business needs which must always take priority.
Communicate early about holiday requests and time off and whether listening or watching a game during working hours is allowed. Make it clear that time off to watch matches should be taken as annual leave and granted on a first come first served basis. Employers could also consider temporary working arrangements eg later starts, early finishes or extended breaks which must be applied fairly and consistently.
Any unauthorised absences should be dealt with under the firm’s Absence Policy.
