POTENTIAL ISSUE OVER EASTER BANK HOLIDAYS 2024

POTENTIAL ISSUE OVER EASTER BANK HOLIDAYS 2024

This year the Easter  Bank Holidays fall on Friday 29 March and Monday 1 April 2024 so that  if your holiday year runs from 1 April to 31 March they straddle 2 holiday years.

In the current holiday year (because of the extra one for the Kings Coronation) there are 9 Bank Holidays but in the forthcoming holiday year there are only 7 (both Easter Bank Holidays in 2025 falling in April).

Therefore if Employers provide for 20 days annual leave plus holidays for full time staff Employees could potentially face a one day annual leave shortfall in the forthcoming holiday year as this would equal 27 days rather than 28 days which is the statutory minimum entitlement.

This can be addressed by:-

  • Increasing the annual leave entitlement by 1 day in 2024/25 so full time employee would receive 21 days + 7 Bank Holidays
  • Asking employees to  temporarily vary their Employment contracts so that in the current year they receive 19 days annual leave plus 9 Bank Holidays and 21 days plus 7 Bank Holidays in the forthcoming yea

If the Contract of Employment states annual leave entitlement is 28 days inclusive of bank holidays the issue is covered. Likewise if holidays are different each year or more than the statutory minimum  annual leave is provided this issue will not affect you.
